ITCA Rescue

The mission of the Rescue Committee is to facilitate the rescue, fostering and careful placement of lost, abandoned, abused or unwanted purebred Irish Terriers in homes appropriate for the individual dog.

Rescue Chairperson Suzanne Brennan (rescueirish@comcast.net)

Rescue dogs need homes which provide a safe environment for proper adjustment. Children, cats, and yards that are not fenced may not always provide the best situation for a successful rescue.  All of the dogs needing new homes require love and attention. Some are mature dogs, often 7 years and up. Irish Terriers are a very healthy breed and remain full of vim and vigor well past the age of 12.

Irish Terriers requiring homes now

Currently, there are Irish Terriers who require homes now so please read on and contact the Chairperson, Suzanne Brennan by email if you are interested in any of these Irish Terriers.  Note they can all be placed in different homes and help is available to move them from out of the states that they currently reside in.

Arkansas Rocky

This is a heartbreaking rescue story. Rocky and his sister Thumper have been much loved pets for their entire lives. They are 12 years old. Both are in good health but their owners are not so lucky. Poor health is forcing them to leave their country home and move to an apartment in town. Rocky is house-broken, he used to living inside and out, and probably would do best in a fairly quiet environment as he is not used to cities or traffic.  Rocky is up-to-date with routine shots.  He is currently living in central Arkansas but can be moved to a different location.  He does not have to be placed with his sister Thumper (see below).

Should you wish to learn more about Rocky with the view of possibly being able to adopt him, please email Suzanne (see below) with the details of your home situation.

Arkansas Thumper

This is Rocky’s litter sister, Thumper.  She has lived with Rocky all her life. but she does not have to be placed with him.  She is 12 years old, healthy and full of Irish spirit. Thumper is not spayed.  She is housebroken and used to living inside and out.  She will do best in a fairly quiet environment  as, like her brother, she is not used to cities and traffic.  Thumper is up-to-date with her routine shots and currently lives in central Arkansas but she can be moved.

Should you wish to learn more about Thumper with the view of possibly being able to adopt her, please email Suzanne (see below) with details of your home situation.

Georgia Celt

Celt is every inch an Irish Terrier, ready to take on all challengers! He's very affectionate and loving with people and he has excellent house manners. He's a bit of a handful when he's out walking on his leash so he will need to go to an experienced terrier home. We would like to place him in a home with no other dogs. He currently lives with a cat and does well with her. He's been with his original owner all of his 10 years and he is very well cared for. A change in life circumstances has forced his owner to look for a new home for her dog Celt. Celt lives in Atlanta, Georgia. He is up-to-date with routine shots and has been neutered.

Should you wish to learn more about Celt with the view of possibly being able to adopt him, please email Suzanne (see below) with details of your home situation.

Sally

Sally was severely neglected and near death when we picked her up from animal control outside of Seattle. After months of rehab, she has made an incredible recovery and is ready for her new home. Sally seems to have no lasting effects from her earlier treatment except that her hearing is impaired. She is very affectionate and loving and will do best  in a home where there are no small children. She can handle cats and male dogs.  Sally is now at a boarding facility in the Seattle area. We estimate that she is about seven years old.

Should you wish to learn more about Sally with the view of possibly being able to adopt her, please email Suzanne (see below) with details of your home situation.

How to Adopt an Irish Terrier

If you do not feel that you can offer a home to any of the above Irish Terriers, there will be other Irish Terriers requiring rescue in the future.

Here is how Irish Terrier Rescue works.  We have one chairperson who in turn has regional helpers. All rescue requests should go through the Chairperson.  Suzanne Brennan.  When we have a dog who might be a good match for you, we email you about the dog.  If you are still interested, the adoption process begins.

At that point in time, you will need to complete an application. Our application is not available on-line but it can be emailed or mailed or mailed to you. A potential adopter must also complete an interview process. Our first choice is always a personal interview but because we are a small club with limited membership, we sometimes do phone interviews. Finally, when someone does adopt a dog, we suggest that they make a donation to our rescue fund.  So if you are interested in maybe adopting a rescue dog in the future follow the instructions given below so that you can be considered should a suitable dog become available.

Would you like to Foster an Irish Terrier?

Maybe you are not quite ready for a dog yet or if you would like a chance to "test drive" an Irish Terrier, then why not consider providing a foster home for a needy dog?  The ITCA requirements for fostering are: Previous dog experience (preferably with a terrier); a fenced yard: a willingness to work with the dog; and the ability to supply feedback to the Rescue Chairperson about the dog's behavior.  Sometime the foster person will need to arrange for veterinary care.  Rescue will be responsible for all veterinary costs.  It is best if foster homes do not have a cat.  If the foster family has another dog, they should be able to separate the rescue dog from the other dog if necessary.  If you are interested in fostering Irish Terriers, please email Suzanne (see below) with the details of your home situation.
